Anne Lambertson Smith

September 2, 1932 ~ March 16, 2018 (age 85)

Anne Lambertson Smith, 85 passed away peacefully at her home on Jacobia Lane, Cape Charles, March 16, 2018. Born September 2, 1932 to parents Henry Jennings “Jake” Lambertson and Elizabeth Gentry Lambertson. She was predeceased by a beloved husband William H. Smith, a son William H. Smith Jr. and brother H. J. “Herky” Lambertson Jr.

Born and raised in Cape Charles, she graduated from CCHS and attended the College of William and Mary. After marriage and the birth of two sons, she took the reins of supermom: everything in its place, meals on the table, never missing a band concert or ball game. Raising a family in the “Big City”, she was one of the many loving and generous mothers whom “helped raise a village”. She was thought of by many as a second mom, a shoulder to cry on, or a friend with whom to share a smile.

Anne was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Cape Charles, which was built by her grandfather. She served on the Altar Guild, Board of Stewards, and as a Sunday school teacher. She was a charter member and past president of the Young Woman’s Club of Cape Charles and owner of The Laundry Basket.

She was a breast cancer survivor of over 44 years with the good Lord keeping her here to console, encourage, uplift and laugh or cry with the dozens of friends and acquaintances, helping each in her special way, when they were going through their own trials and tribulations.

Almost daily she mailed out a card or emailed a friend with words of encouragement, strength, thanks or empathy. All that knew her were influenced in some way to help make this world a better place.

She was devoted to her husband, children and the joy of her life, her grandchildren. Affectionately known as “Mimi”, her grandchildren remember her as their confidante, a best friend, game player, and hug giver. Her singular focus was always the love, care and protection of her family. She was an unashamed world class guardian of each child and grandchild. The love, guidance, dedication and commitment that she showed her family was an honor to witness, instilling in all her family their own ability to feel and express deep love and affection. In the end this will be her enduring legacy. She set the bar, and she set it high.

Left to cherish her memory is her son, Steven D. Smith and wife Christy Fugate Smith. Her grandchildren, Palmer Elizabeth, William Wade and Henry Fugate Smith. Her sister in law Eleanor Bull Lambertson of Eastville. Nieces and nephews, Pamela Lambertson Parks,
Brenda Dunton, Kim and Russ Dunton, , Bruce and Violet Lambertson. Several great and great-great nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday, March 18th at 2:00 at Cape Charles Cemetery with the Reverends Linda Lowe and Jeff Conrow officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK. 73123 or Riverside Shore Hospice, P.O. Box 615, Onley, VA. 23418.
